A great icon of Naples is the saint San Gennaro: the spire dedicated to him , the oldest of the city , is an ex voto offered by the Neapolitans to their patron saint to have them protected by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 1631. Few steps away one can find the Cathedral, which houses the precious Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, dominated by the spectacular view under the cupola of Paradise by the painter Giovanni Lanfranco. It is here that the reliquary bust is kept, masterpiece of Gothic jewellery, together with the vials containing the blood of the saint. Twice a year, thousands of believers witness the miracle of the liquefaction entrusting the fortunes of the city with the realization of this event.
The churches of Naples are numerous and, among them, noteworthy are the famous Santa Chiara and the Gothic San Domenico Maggiore churches. The latter boasts an extraordinary cycle of frescoes by Pietro Cavallini, one of the most important artists of the fourteenth century, considered in recent times as important and innovator as Giotto .
The baroque magnificence of the interior of San Gregorio Armeno Church dates back a few centuries later, while, the monumental façade of The New Jesus Church, in comparison, looks sober. In Piazza Plebiscito stands the church dedicated to St. Francis of Paola with its rational lines, and perhaps even utopian, of a renewed classicism typical of the eighteenth century.
After walking under the imposing glass and iron cover of the Galleria Umberto I’s Arcade, after visiting the wonderful San Carlo Opera House, after reaching the Certosa di San Martino and Castel Sant 'Elmo, after visiting the rich collection of majolica in the Floridiana Museum, it will be worth visiting much more. The “hidden Naples”, carved into the volcanic rock and made of tunnels , catacombs, tombs and cemeteries: a world in contrast with the world in the open air.
