One of the pearls of the Amalfi Coast is Positano. Ancient fishing village, Positano is today one of the most popular and elegant seaside resorts in Italy. It is located in an exceptionally picturesque position, at the centre of the gulf. The houses are spread on the steep slopes of Monte Comune and Monte Sant'Angelo. Gardens and citrus groves introduce a note of green between the white of the houses, many of which retain the characteristic cubic form with their spherical vault. According to tradition, Positano was founded by the inhabitants of Paestum, refugees from their city that was destroyed by the Saracens. The inhabitants of Positano remained for some time vassals of the Badia, then they freed themselves and started to trade by sea rivalling the nearest and powerful Amalfi.
