With this great private guided excursion combining Pompeii, Herculaneum and Mt Vesuvius you'll discover the full story of an event that changed our knowledge of old Roman habits and history.

Life carried on normally until 24 August 79 AD, when the eruption of Vesuvius destroyed both Pompeii and Herculaneum, two towns on the outskirts of Neapolis. Pompeii was pelted with falling pumice stones while Herculaneum was blanketed by thick pyroclastic flow.

The history of the excavations of Pompeii is long and fascinating as that of the city itself. In 1948 Pompeii celebrated the second centenary of its rediscovery. In fact, the first Official excavations on the hill of Civita dated back to the early months of 1748 when the identification of those ruins was still uncertain and so much under discussion that they mixed up them for those of ancient Stabiae or for one of the many suburban villas that cropped up from time to time in those campaigns buried by the eruption of 79. However, as uncertain as it were the first discoveries, these excavations soon took precedence over those of the already famous Herculaneum. In fact, while in Herculaneum the excavation languished due to the risk of the tunnels and whenever they found or not the expected bronzes, marbles and paintings, in Pompeii was true the opposite thanks to the ease with which it was possible to  remove the blanket of ash and lapilli and to the possibility to bring to light the ruins. Excavations in Pompeii revealed that, in addition to the recovery of works of art, there was another and more interesting allure to follow, that is the chance to dig up the residential area of an entire city and the mysterious life of its inhabitants. That's why, after two centuries of excavation, Pompeii began with renewed vigour the third centenary of the his rebirth. Pompeii has preserved the most human and the most alive among the many glorious ruins scattered along the world and instead of wearing out and growing old in its second life of unearthed city, it seems to bring new warmth and new appeal from its continuity. And in these two centuries, through the improvement of working methods, Pompeii has come to reveal his true face. In fact, the most conspicuous part of the city has come to light. We have in fact discovered the vital centre of its urban layout: the Forum with its buildings, the Theatres, the Triangular Forum, the Amphitheatre and the Baths.

Smaller but no less valuable of Pompeii, is the town of Herculaneum. Herculaneum was buried by mud that allowed a remarkable preservation of the buildings. In Roman times, Herculaneum was a town of medium importance with luxurious homes along the sides of the promontory, overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The refinement of the decoration suggests that Herculaneum was a residential town, chosen by a population who appreciated the healthy climate and the peaceful atmosphere. Our professional guide will take you for two hours to explore this ancient place founded by Hercules.

And then the logical conclusion of the great excursion is the visit of Mt Vesuvius, responsible for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Although it may seems strange, the eruption of Vesuvius caught both towns unprepared. In fact the last eruption took place before the foundation of Pompeii. On August 24, 79 AD Mount Vesuvius suddenly erupted a huge amount of pumice stones and poisonous gases that forever destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. Vesuvius is today the most famous volcano in the world: it has produced its own literature, imagery, scientific and universal insight but most of all it has engendered a huge amount of sheer astonishment.

This private guided excursion to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius will take place under all weather.
